A Wild, Natural Encounter

A Wild, Natural Encounter

This experience happens during natural cruise transit through Saleh Bay, between Sumbawa and Flores, where whale sharks feed near traditional bagan platforms. There is no commercial baiting and no guaranteed show.

It is a genuine wild encounter — which is exactly what makes it memorable.

About the Whale Shark
02 Chapter

About the Whale Shark

Adults measure 10 to 15 metres, with the largest recorded near 18.8 metres and weights of 20 to 40 tons. Despite their size they are gentle filter feeders, sieving fish eggs and crustacean larvae through throats only about five centimetres wide.

They cruise steadily at the surface and are generally indifferent to the people around them.

Best Time to Go

Calm morning conditions in the bay give the clearest, easiest encounters.

Responsible Interaction
04 Chapter

Responsible Interaction

Boats approach parallel to the shark’s path and cut engines beyond 30 metres. Snorkellers enter the water at least 10 metres ahead so the animal passes naturally, and each encounter is limited to a maximum of 30 minutes.

Flash photography, touching, feeding and baiting are all prohibited — by law and by ethics.

Conservation
05 Chapter

Conservation

A portion of every cruise booking supports local marine conservation in Saleh Bay, including whale shark photo-ID research that tracks individual animals over time.

Choosing an ethical operator directly funds the long-term protection of this population.
