Why Dive the Lombok to Komodo Route?

The waters between Lombok and Komodo sit at the confluence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, creating nutrient-rich currents that sustain extraordinary marine biodiversity. This region is part of the Coral Triangle — the global epicenter of marine life, containing more species of coral and fish than anywhere else on the planet. A liveaboard diving trip along this route gives you access to sites that shore-based divers and day-trip operators simply cannot reach.

Unlike standard Labuan Bajo-based liveaboards that only cover Komodo National Park waters, our Lombok departure route adds unique dive sites along the Sumbawa coastline, the volcanic underwater landscapes near Sangeang, and the remote reefs around Gili Banta — sites that see fewer than 100 divers per year. You get the iconic Komodo dives PLUS exclusive sites that most diving liveaboards never visit.

Our diving liveaboard trips are designed for certified divers (Open Water and above) with varying experience levels. Advanced sites like Batu Bolong and Castle Rock feature strong currents and are recommended for Advanced Open Water or equivalent certification. Our PADI-certified dive guides assess conditions before every dive and select sites appropriate for the group’s experience level.

Top Dive Sites on the Route

Batu Bolong

A pinnacle rock surrounded by fierce currents and explosive marine life. Giant trevally, whitetip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, and massive schools of fusiliers swirl around coral-encrusted walls. Visibility: 15-25m. Level: Advanced.

Manta Alley & Manta Point

Cleaning stations where oceanic manta rays glide in for grooming. Multiple mantas on a single dive is common between April and November. Gentle currents make this accessible to Open Water divers. Visibility: 10-20m.

Castle Rock

Submerged seamount attracting large pelagics — grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and massive schools of surgeonfish create a wall of silver around the rock. Strong currents. Level: Advanced.

Sangeang Volcano Reef

Unique volcanic black sand diving with bubble vents, rare nudibranch species, and seahorse colonies. A macro photographer’s paradise. Almost never visited by standard liveaboards. Level: All levels.

Diving FAQ

What certification do I need?

Minimum PADI Open Water or equivalent recognized certification. Advanced Open Water is recommended for the best Komodo dive sites (Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock) which feature moderate to strong currents. We also welcome snorkelers — while divers descend, snorkelers explore the surface reefs at the same sites.

Is diving equipment provided?

Tanks, weights, and basic snorkeling gear are included. Full BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, and fin rental is available at USD 50/day or USD 250 for the full trip. Experienced divers are welcome to bring their own equipment. We carry spare parts and basic repair tools on board.

What is the best season for diving this route?

April through November offers the best conditions. Manta ray season peaks April to November at cleaning stations. Visibility is best July through September (20-30 meters). Water temperature ranges from 24-28°C depending on depth and location. The nutrient-rich currents that create challenging conditions also bring in the large pelagics that make Komodo diving world-famous.
